Now, I watched him since he was 16 so I think I could answer this question. In short, I think he worths it. Not necessarily because of what he is now but what he can become. I think right now he is like 40-50 mill player. But I also think that in the right system and with the right guidance, he can easily develop into an invaluable player (like De Bruyne, a player he is compared a lot not entirely wrongfully). He doesn't score a lot because in Leipzig he plays in a deeper role. Leipzig has a lot of relatively selfish goal scorers so he is kinda pushed a line back. Also, he has, to use a football manager lingo, the "Looks for Pass Rather than Attempting to Score" trait. Despite his insane longshot ability and just shooting in general, he relatively rarely tries to shoot. He also could've had way more assists if his teammates weren't, how to put it nicely... Dumb. Werner and Silva are both great players technically and physically but they make sooooo many dumb plays, trying to score from impossible positions instead of passing the ball, making the wrong runs, not making runs etc. Frosberg is a bit better (not by much) but he isn't as good technically, and when Nkunku is on the pitch, everything revolves around him. But he still does his job. Which tells you that he is actually a very versatile player. He has the skills to play in an attacking role but you can also push him back to a deeper role. Though he is not as good at controlling the pace of the game or soaking up pressure yet like a deep laying playmaker. Though I think he has the skills and just needs more experience.

Just because Haaland is having an amazing debut season, people bash on Darwin because he doesn't have the same numbers. He already has 12 goals and 4 assists this season, which is good for a 23-years old striker in his debut season in the major leagues. As a Benfica fan I know that what Darwin lacks more in his game is confidence, as soon as he gets it it will be hard to stop him. In his first season at Benfica he only scored 14 goals, in his second season he scored 34. And also this Liverpool side is not as good as it use to be, with a more solid midfield and when Luís Diaz is back providing for Darwin, he will hopefully score even more.

I think it’s more that Real Madrid (especially Zidane) still rely on individual game changers rather than system players. That’s why guys like Ramos, Benzema, and Modric are still given starts over players like Odegaard, Militao, and even Hakimi who was sold. Odegaard to me is a player that does well in a system that allows him to be creative and therefore at his best. With Madrid if you can’t take the ball and atleast have a 45-50% chance of creating/scoring a goal, you don’t get playing time. Outdated Galactico philosophy.
